On Friday, the Senate passed SB 171 on an 18-2 vote, with Senators John Coghill (North Pole) and Fred Dyson (Eagle River) voting no.
The bill now goes to the House. SB 171 would raise the Base Student Allocation (BSA) by $125 in Fiscal Year 13 (beginning July 1, 2012).
Over the next two years it would raise the BSA an Additional $130 in FY 14 and $135 in FY 15. Each $100 increase in the BSA costs the state about $25 million.
The following increase to K-12 education would occur if SB 171 passes the legislature:

Secure retirements are not about luck…it takes coordinated effort to effect change with our
elected officials. Today, you can take action and be a partner in that change.
SB 121 and HB 236, is the legislation that creates an option for TRS and PERS employees hired on or
after July 2006 to choose either a defined benefit or a defined contribution retirement plan. We
expect Senate Bill 121 to be heard in the finance committee in the upcoming days of the session,
followed by a full vote before the end of the session.
House Bill 236 will be even more of a challenge with significant hurdles.

The attached two documents are related to NEA-AK efforts to return to a defined benefit retirement for our teachers and public employees.
This is the year to take action!
Please take a few minutes to email your senator and representative and let them know how important this is.
If you were hired new to the state after July 1 of 2006, then you are in the Defined Contribution system.
They need to hear your story. Click "Read more . . ."
