01-16/17-12 KPEA Bargaining Update

Update from Bargaining

Tuesday, January 17 and Wednesday, January 18, 2012

The team met yesterday (January 17) and (January 18) at the conference room in the 4-D building.

We appreciate the support of members attending last night: Kim Bates and her husband Curtis, Angie Hamm-Brinkerhoff, and Katie Carmody.

Last night’s session began with Terri Tidwell and KPESA discussion.

KPEA began bargaining with the district around 6:15 Tuesday night.

Section 435 Job Openings was TA’d with some housekeeping changes.

Section 345 Unpaid Leave of Absences was discussed.

Section 140 Discretional Monies the association is not signing off on yet because it is monetary. The district has proposed a $25 increase in discretional monies.

Section 140 Involuntary Transfer was discussed.

Section 425 School Closure is tied to 470 Workday and can’t be agreed to until 470 is settled.

Section 436 Teacher Involvement in Selection of Administrator was TA’d with housekeeping changes.

Section 483 Teacher Rights and 540 Non Jeopardy Clause were pulled by the district and current language was TA’d. These were two sections the district had proposed to strike because they didn’t think they were needed. “We don’t discriminate”, “we don’t do that.”

Section 490 Teacher Evaluation, the association clarifies that teachers can respond to any evaluation including a Needs Improvement Plan and/or a Direct Assistance Plan.

Section 490 is TA’d.

The answer to the three questions (these answers aren’t verbatim)

1.      Who did the bargaining unit members contact regarding their concern
(s) of 550
District office, school board members, health committee members and other employees.

2.      2. Since the signing of the current contract how many KPEA bargaining
unit members have contacted the entity in question #1 regarding section
550?
Most conversations were oral in nature and not recorded. One email from a KPESA employee was produced.
 3. Were the cost of the fees the only cost item mentioned by the
